CHAPTER 33

THE NEXT PART OF MY plan begins three days later, once Blake has had a chance to mostly heal from our little sewing lesson.

“Hey, Jess,” Blake says. “What do you think of Danny Knight?”

“Trust fund Danny Knight?” she asks.

The three of us are in Blake’s bedroom, putting our clothes back on. It’s the last time we’ll be together like this, but Jessica doesn’t know it yet. Blake and I have decided it’s best to let her down easy. His punishment, of course, is covered in real bandages now. Not lemon-soaked. That was only for the first couple of days. I’m not a monster. Besides, we would have had to explain that to Jessica, and it’s really none of her business.

“Yeah. Fuckin’ crazy trust fund, too. So, what do you think about him?”

“I don’t know. Why?” she asks, but her eyes widen, betraying her feigned lack of interest for what it really is—total, complete, wide-eyed, salivating curiosity that he’s bringing it up.

“I think he’s into you.”

“Whatever,” she says.

“I’m serious,” Blake says.

“I saw him checking out your ass when you came in tonight,” I say.

“You did?” she asks.

“Yeah. He was trying to make it seem like he wasn’t looking, but he totally moved over by the mirror so he could watch you when you walked up the stairs.”

“Still, that doesn’t exactly mean he’s interested,” she says. “Danny doesn’t date. He fucks. He hasn’t had a girlfriend the entire time I’ve known him.”

Blake says, “Yeah, but—and don’t tell him I told you this—after he graduates, his trust doesn’t kick in again until he gets engaged.”

“Seriously?” she asks.

“He’s been quiet about it. Doesn’t want girls after him for the wrong reasons or anything, but he’s done playing the field. He’s got to find somebody to get serious with. Fast, too.”

“And you think he’s into me?”

“I overheard him telling Jason you were on his list,” Blake says with a mischievous grin.

“Wait, what?” Jessica laughs.

“He has this list. Of girls he’s going to, I don’t know, audition for marriage or something,” Blake says.

“That’s fucking bizarre,” she says.

“Call it whatever you want, but it’s the way the dude thinks,” Blake says. “Remember the ice cream social back in sophomore year? He was in charge of it and had like, lists for everything: what music to play, what flavors to have, which girls to invite. He was like a chic almost.”

“I guess I didn’t know that,” Jessica says.

“Raised a ton of dough for the Smile Foundation too, he’s super into philanthropy. You should give the guy a chance. I think you guys might hit it off.”

Jessica doesn’t say whether she will or won’t, but a few days later when I’m walking away from Blake’s first Monday/Wednesday class, I get a call from her.

“Do you think you could do me a favor?” she asks.

“Sure,” I say. “What is it?”

“I was wondering if you could maybe mention my name to Danny, see if he bites.”

“You want to go out with him?”

“I guess. I don’t know,” she says, trying to play it off.
